BOYLE ENDOWMENT FOR NURSING STUDIES

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2001 by Boyle Companies in order to promote the study of Nursing or Nursing Home Administration at the community level.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating high school seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education to prepare them for a career in the field of Nursing or Nursing Home Administration.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from a high school located in:
• Creston, Onawa, Rock Rapids, Rockwell City or Shenandoah, Iowa
• North Platte, Nebraska

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, ACT/SAT test scores, school and/or community service activities, work history, and essay evaluation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $500, not renewable.

COL. V. THOMAS CONSIDINE SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2001 by family and friends in loving memory of Col. V. Thomas Considine.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating high school seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at a college/university or vocational/technical institute to obtain a trade, associate, or academic degree.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: High school seniors who (1) are a member of the 185th Iowa Air National Guard; (2) have enlisted in the 185th Iowa Air National Guard prior to this scholarship application’s due date of February 15; (3) are children or other legal dependents of a currently active member of the 185th Iowa Air National Guard unit headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa; or (4) are children or other legal dependents of a retired member of the 185th.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, school and/or community service activities, work history, essay evaluation, and recommendations.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $500, not renewable

DR. ROGER F. WENDT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

BACKGROUND: The Dr. Roger F. Wendt Memorial Scholarship is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. This scholarship fund was established in 2011 by family and friends in loving memory of Dr. Wendt. He spent 9 years as a teacher in the Sioux City Community School District and 35 five years in administration as an assistant principal, principal, director of secondary education, and assistant superintendent in the District. He proudly served the students and their families for 44 years before retiring in 2002. He then began his second career by being elected State Representative in House District 2 for 4 terms in office, serving as a member of the House Education Committee for 8 years.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist seniors graduating from Sioux City public high schools in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited college/university in the field of education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from East, North, or West High School in Sioux City, Iowa; have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; and must be pursuing a degree in the field of education.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, school and/or community service activities, financial need, and essay evaluation.

DUANE & SHIRLEY HILLER STUDENT ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: The Duane & Shirley Hiller Student Athlete Scholarship Fund is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. This scholarship fund was established in 2009 by family and friends.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating seniors at West Monona High School or Kingsley-Pierson High School in their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from either West Monona High School or Kingsley-Pierson High School that have been involved in school sponsored sports for each of their four (4) years while in high school and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 (out of 4.0). Applicants must be pursuing a post-secondary education at an accredited educational institution located in Iowa, Nebraska, or South Dakota.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance, participation in extracurricular & community activities, work history, and essay evaluation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $250, not renewable.

ELIZABETH LOUISE JENSEN – GIRLS INC. SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2003 by family and friends in loving memory of Elizabeth.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist members or former members of Girls Inc. (Sioux City, Iowa) in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at one of the following local post-secondary educational institutions: Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, Western Iowa Tech Community College, or St. Luke’s College.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must have a minimum of two years active membership with Girls Inc. of Sioux City, Iowa, since age ten and/or have returned to Girls Inc. as a current volunteer. Applicants must graduate from a Siouxland high school (approximate 20-mile radius of Sioux City, IA) and have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.5 (out of 4.0).

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, ACT/SAT test scores, school and/or community service activities, work history, leadership, financial need, and essay evaluation.

FLIGHT CREW (UNITED 232) SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established by the flight crew of United 232 in appreciation of Siouxland’s valiant rescue and recovery efforts during the aftermath of the United Airlines Flight 232 incident on July 19, 1989.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating high school seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education to prepare them for a career in the medical/health science field.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from a high school located within the Siouxland tri-state area (approximate 50-mile radius of Sioux City, Iowa). Applicants must be pursuing a career in the medical/health science field (i.e., nurse; physician; physician’s assistant; radiological, medical, or surgical technologist; lab technician; physical or occupational therapist, etc.) at one of the following Sioux City, Iowa, post-secondary educational institutions: Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, Western Iowa Tech Community College, or St. Luke’s College.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, ACT/SAT test scores, school and/or community service activities, work history, and essay evaluation.

GREAT WEST CASUALTY COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established by Great West Casualty Company in 1995 to assist children or other legal dependents of active full-time regular employees of any ORI Great West Holdings, Inc. subsidiary corporation in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be the son or daughter of a currently active full-time person employed by any ORI Great West Holdings, Inc. subsidiary corporation for a minimum of one year prior to the date of the scholarship application. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as above-average scholastic performance while in high school, class rank, ACT/SAT test scores, and essay evaluation. Applicants must have applied or been accepted as a full-time student at an accredited post-secondary educational institution located within the United States. Priority consideration will be given to those attending a four-year college/university.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Maximum of four scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students entering college, with a maximum of four scholarships of $500 each available to scholarship recipients who may reapply for a one-time renewal of scholarship aid if renewal criteria is met.

GREATER SIOUX CITY PRESS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2005 by the Greater Sioux City Press Club to provide assistance for college students pursuing a career in Mass Communication or Journalism.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in college that has declared a major in the Mass Communication Department or Journalism. The scholarship will be applied to the recipient’s junior or senior year of college. Qualifying institutions include Briar Cliff University, Buena Vista University, Dordt College, Morningside College, Northwestern College, University of South Dakota and Wayne State College. Applicant must be a full-time student with a 3.0 minimum G.P.A.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on written essay, letter of recommendation, and sample(s) of work from the field of study.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,000; not renewable

HERROLD "MR. A." ASMUSSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2002 in memory of Herrold "Mr. A" Asmussen, who taught biology and coached at Central High School and North High School for 38 years. “Mr. A.” received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Morningside College and took graduate studies at the University of Southern California, University of Alaska and the University of South Dakota. He graduated from the Yosemite Field School of Natural History. He served as a ranger naturalist in Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Yellowstone National Parks, and founded a youth workshop study program at the White River National Forest in Colorado.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating North high School seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at a college/university or vocational/technical institute to obtain an associate or academic degree.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from North High School in Sioux City, Iowa, that are pursuing a career in the field of science (i.e., genetics, biology, chemistry, physics, atmospheric sciences, biochemistry, geology, zoology, environmental science, marine science, horticulture).

SELECTION: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, ACT/SAT test scores, school and/or community service activities, work history, financial need, and essay evaluation.

KAREN LINDER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2008 by family and friends in loving memory of Karen who was killed in a tragic car accident in 2007.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating North High School seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited four-year college/university.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from North High School in Sioux City, Iowa; have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5; and must have participated in Fine Arts extracurricular school and/or community activities.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, school and/or community service activities, financial need, and essay evaluation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $500, not renewable.

KIND WORLD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2008 by the Kind World Foundation. The Kind World Foundation is a private family foundation originally established by Norman W. Waitt, Jr. as a means of sharing his business success with others. Norm grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Central High School in 1972 and from Morningside College in 1986. Prior to the establishment of Waitt Radio, Waitt Outdoor & Gold Circle Films, he and his brother, Ted, co-founded the computer company, Gateway 2000, Inc. in 1986. Although now headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Kind World Foundation is continuing its commitment and concern for the Siouxland community.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist Siouxland graduating high school seniors in realizing their dreams of going to college to pursue a post-secondary education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from East High School, North High School, West High School, or Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa; Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; Dakota Valley High School in North Sioux City, South Dakota; Elk-Point Jefferson High School in Elk Point, South Dakota; or South Sioux City Senior High School in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0).

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, good character, participation in extracurricular school activities, community service, work history, financial need, special circumstances or hardships overcome, and essay evaluation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Awards range from $5,000 to $10,000.

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2005 by the Lawton Centennial Committee with money remaining from the community’s fundraising to commemorate Lawton’s 100 year history.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating Lawton-Bronson High School seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from Lawton-Bronson High School located in Lawton, Iowa, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (out of 4.0).

BACKGROUND: The Macfarlane Family Scholarship was established in 2008 by Winifred H. Macfarlane and is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating Sioux City high school seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from a public or parochial high school located in Sioux City, Iowa, with a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (out of 4.0). Applicants must be pursuing a post-secondary education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, good character, participation in extracurricular school activities, community service, work history, financial need, and essay evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary Nursing Scholarship is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. This scholarship fund was established in 2007 by the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist Siouxland area college/university juniors that are enrolled in a four-year undergraduate B.S.N. program to pursue a career in nursing.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicant must be a Siouxland area college/university junior enrolled in a four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, or Northwestern College. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (out of 4.0) in college.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance, school and/or community service activities, work history, financial need, and essay evaluation.

NOVOTNY / OSBORNE SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2001 by Thomas R. and Jeanne K. (Osborne) Novotny, former residents of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, in appreciation of the excellent education their children received.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School seniors in their pursuit of a one, two, three, or four year trade, associate, or academic post-secondary degree.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School located in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Recipients of the Novotny/Osborne Scholarship may receive other scholarships as long as those scholarships are not based on athletic ability and do not total more than $9,000 at the time of high school graduation.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, ACT/SAT test scores, school and/or community service activities, work history, financial need, essay evaluation, and recommendations.

PAUL LINDBERG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: The Paul Lindberg Memorial Scholarship is administered by the Siouxland Community Foundation headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa. This scholarship fund was originally established by the Westwood Education Foundation in memory of Paul Lindberg.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating Westwood High School seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited college/university to obtain a 4-year academic degree. In memory of Mr. Lindberg, applicants must be pursuing a career in the field of agriculture or engineering.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0), be pursuing a career in the field of agriculture or engineering, and be graduating seniors from Westwood High School in Sloan, IA.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, participation in school activities, work history, financial need, and essay evaluation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,000 - not renewable

UNITED AIRLINES TRUST FUND SCHOLARSHIPS

BACKGROUND: In appreciation of Siouxland’s response to the United Flight 232 incident in July of 1989, United Airlines established a Fund within the Foundation. According to the terms set forth by United Airlines, two-thirds of the annual net income from this Fund is allocated for scholarship assistance. The remaining one-third is available for community grants

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be students from the greater Siouxland tri-state area (general 50-mile radius of Sioux City, Iowa) that are pursuing an education in such fields as nursing, emergency rescue, medical care, counseling, clergy, or social work at Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, or Western Iowa Tech Community College.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Two-thirds of the Fund’s annual net income is allocated equally among the three local post-secondary educational institutions for the exclusive purpose of providing scholarships to students that meet the above-stated criteria.

SELECTION: Recipients of United Airlines Trust Fund Scholarships are selected by the qualified post-secondary educational institutions in Sioux City, Iowa, from the pool of applicants each year.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Obtain by contacting the financial aid department at Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, or Western Iowa Tech Community College.

WAKEFIELD COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This is a scholarship fund of the Wakefield Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The applicant must be a Wakefield School District graduating high school senior and must plan to enroll as a full-time student at an accredited public or private university, college, vocational, technical, or other post-secondary institution.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on essay evaluation and such factors as dedication to academics (minimum 2.0 GPA) and extra-curricular school activities, involvement with community and church activities, and leadership.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: minimum of $400, non-renewable

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by the February 15 deadline and must include the following:

• Completed application with signature
• High School Certification Form with official high school transcript
• Essay

WAKEFIELD HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1955 SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This is a scholarship fund of the Wakefield Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: The applicant must be a Wakefield School District graduating high school senior and must plan to enroll as a full-time student at an accredited college or trade school in pursuit of a two or four year trade, associate, or academic degree. The applicant must have completed the 10th, 11th and 12th grades at Wakefield High School.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on essay evaluation and such factors as dedication to academics (minimum 2.0 GPA) and involvement with extra-curricular school and community activities.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,000; non-renewable

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by the February 15 deadline and must include the following:

• Completed application with signature
• High School Certification Form with official high school transcript
• Two (2) Character Counts Recommendation Forms
• Essay

WALT FIEGEL SCHOLARSHIP

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2004 by Sioux City East High School alumni in memory of long-time coach Walt Fiegel to perpetuate his spirit and positive influence on youth.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating high school seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at a college/university or vocational/technical institute to obtain a trade, associate, or academic degree.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from East High School, North High School, West High School, or Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa; Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; or Dakota Valley High School in North Sioux City, South Dakota.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, good character, participation in extracurricular school activities, work history, financial need, and essay evaluation.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $1,000 - not renewable.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by the February 15 deadline and must include the following:

• Completed application with signature
• First page of parents'/guardians' most current U.S. Income Tax Return (Form 1040)
• Essay
• Two (2) "Character Counts" recommendations
• High School Certification Form with official high school transcript
